Jagmeet Singh is calling out Netflix for not paying enough taxes
Jagmeet Singh is slamming Netflix for not paying enough in taxes while placing the blame on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The NDP leader took to social media on Friday to call out the streaming service, as well as other "mega-corporations," for paying "$0 in taxes."
He also added that this is happening because Trudeau "won't do the right thing" and end pandemic profiteering.
Even in a crisis, Canadians work hard & pay their fair share

While some agreed with Singh, others pointed out that Trudeau's government this exact issue in his Speech from the Throne last month. In fact, Governor-General Julie Payette said that foreign-based web giants are taking Canadians' money while imposing their own priorities.
"The government will act to ensure their revenue is shared more fairly with our creators and media, and will also require them to contribute to the creation, production, and distribution of our stories, on screen, in lyrics, in music, and in writing," she said.
It’s a good thing this was in the throne speech then, right?

Is this one of those “I had the idea first!” things when the government has already announced their intent to do just that?
Singh's comments come just a day after Netflix Canada announced an increase in subscription prices. The standard monthly plan, for instance, increased by a dollar to $14.99. The premium plans increased by two dollars to $18.99.
This did not sit well with Canadians, especially given that we are in the middle of a global pandemic.
With the pandemic still going on and people still at home or working from home, people will eat up the increase. Win for Netflix and loss for consumers.

On Thursday, Singh told reporters in Ottawa that the NDP want the liberals to introduce a new tax on companies who have earned significant profits during the pandemic.
"The very wealthiest among us got richer and richer, some wealthy corporations have made, and continue to make, record profits because of the pandemicIn fact, Canadian billionaires are $37 billion richer since the March 2020 COVID-19 lockdown," the NDP announced on their website.
"Instead of cutting services and help for people, Trudeau needs to make the wealthiest and those who excessively profit from the pandemic pay their fair share, so we can better deliver help to the people who really need it."
