According to Statista, the median house price in Canada is forecasted to hit $531,000 this year. A decade ago, the average price of a Canadian home was just under $350,000.  

This kind of makes me wish there was a time machine so I could go purchase an average house in 2010.

But for those of you who are considering purchasing an average house in Canada this year here's what you can get for $550,000 in cities across the great white north. 

Vancouver

As far as conventional homes go, you'd be hard pressed to find one in Vancouver for $550K. However, if you're willing to be a bit more flexible and you don't get sea-sick this 1,782 square-foot home is a beauty! It was re-built from the "float" up in 2010. It has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, an open plan layout, cool exposed beams and a fireplace.  

Calgary

Located in the family-friendly West Springs neighbourhood this home has three bedrooms and lots of new upgrades. The high ceilings and big windows allow for lots of natural light. The backyard is professionally landscaped and the master bedroom has a Jacuzzi tub. What more could you want? 

Toronto

Finding a place in central Toronto for $550,000 is a Herculean task. You can barely find a condo for that price. But there is this row house close to Dufferin Mall –known locally as "The Dirty Duff". The home is dated and in desperate need of some renovations but it has hardwood floors and is centrally located. 

Ottawa

This four bedroom bungalow is charming. The home has plenty of recent updates, spacious principal rooms and sits on a 50 x 100 foot lot. Also when the snow clears it will have a spectacular garden. According to the listing there's plenty of good earth for veggies!

Winnipeg

Just outside downtown Winnipeg is this stunning stone home in Lorette. The home has five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a finished basement. The home also boasts and oversized garage with in-floor heating, which I imagine comes in handy during the winter. There's also 2.5 acres of land surrounding the home.   

Saskatoon

For just a little over $550K is this custom built modern home. The home was specifically designed to be easy to clean, which is an excellent design goal! The home is open concept with lots of space for living and entertaining. My favourite part is the beautiful wood feature wall in the master bedroom. 

Montreal

If you're a sucker for heritage properties this one is exceptional. It looks like that cute cottage in The Holiday. Located on Ile-Bizard, this quaint home has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The home has been beautifully maintained and has more than enough charm and character. 

Charlottetown

For just under $550,000 you can have this fully renovated estate-like home. It's just outside Charlottetown with three huge bedrooms, four bathrooms and 2 acres of property. The kitchen, living room and dining room are open making it ideal for entertaining or keeping an eye on the family. 

St. Johns

Oh my days this historical Queen Anne home right in the heart of downtown St. Johns is a dream! The home boasts four bedrooms all with ensuites, two clawfoot tubs, original fireplaces, stained glass windows and the original staircase. It's currently a bed-and-breakfast, so you can have a new house and vocation.

Yellowknife

This three-bedroom, three-bathroom duplex is available for just under $550,000. According to the listing, the home was built for energy efficiency with triple glazed windows and a pellet stove. The home was recently renovated so it's nice and modern. There's also a large backyard to make use of.
