This is what a $5 million home looks like in cities across Canada
$5 million is a lot to spend on a home no matter where you live, even in places like Toronto or Vancouver. In fact, $5 million is more than most people will earn in a lifetime.
According to the latest figures from Statistics Canada, the average Canadian earns rough $51,000 a year. That was back in 2017, so it's probably closer to $70,000 now.
But even still, $70,000 a year with two percent yearly growth and you'll just surpass $5 million at the age of retirement.
So with that in mind, here's what you can get in cities across Canada for the equivalent of an average person's lifetime of work.
Apparently you can live in a Drake-worthy mansion for $5.25 million. Located just a 30 minute drive from downtown Calgary you get the best of both worlds. The home is filled with all the luxuries, including a wine cellar, home gym, home theatre and more.
While Vancouver is known for it's outrageous housing market you might think $5 million is chump change. This Frank Llyod Wright-like home is gorgeous. This three-bedroom house has panoramic views of the city, water, and bridge from Mount Baker to UBC to Vancouver Island. It also has a heated outdoor pool in case you weren't sold.
Just steps from Lake Ontario is this restored Victorian single family home. It's filled with charm, character and beautiful luxury finishes such as marble bathtubs and a custom kitchen.
Nothing even comes close to $5 million in Winnipeg. Houses seem to tap out before the $4 million mark. So this European influenced mansion in Headingley, just outside Winnipeg, for $3.9 million is a rarity. The interior offers carved mahogany doors, gold-leafed wall panels, an elevator, an English Pub, full recording studio and more.
Located in central Montreal is this historic beauty. Built in 1933 the home has an old European stone house facade. It has since undergone a complete renovation and according to the listing you can buy the place fully furnished, which seems worth it when you see how beautifully it was decorated.
This house won the 2018 Greater Ottawa Builders Association Housing Awards, according to the listing. It has six bedrooms, seven bathrooms and over 7,000-square-feet of living space. It also has a massive 20,000-square-foot private lot with a indoor pool.
Overlooking the South Saskatchewan river is this luxury property for $4.6 million. It has some of the most interesting design elements to ensure that the view isn't compromised. There's also a bathtub in the shape of a high heeled shoe.
The house is nothing special. In fact, it's kind of a lame bungalow. But for $4.5 million the bungalow does come with over 60 acres of land next to a golf course.
For just under $5 million you can get this waterfront estate in Halifax. It has over 7,000 square-feet of living space, a 40 foot pool and a huge garden. It also comes with the deeded water lot so you can do whatever you want to the property.
