Eight out of ten Canadians—or 81 per cent—are standing firm that the Canada-U.S. border should remain closed, according to a new poll.

A poll conducted by Nanos Research finds that reopening the border gets a big no from Canadians right now, or at least until the U.S. gets a handle on its COVID-19 situation.

The survey asked 1,049 Canadians if they think the border should remain closed and an overwhelming majority said yes, due in part of the recent spike in COVID-19 cases the U.S. has seen.

The Canada-U.S. border has remained closed to all but essential travel since late March. It's set to remain closed until at least July 21.

Data and maps from the U.S. versus Canada show just how differently the two countries are handling the outbreak, leading many to express reluctance in reopening the border between them anytime soon.

In May, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam advised that a potential border reopening should be approached with "extreme caution."

Likewise, British Columbia's Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said recently that vacations between the two countries are unlikely this summer.

Most Canadians have already said that they do not want the border reopened until at least September, while one doctor has suggested the closure should continue until next year.
