Yesterday, Vancouver city council voted 'yes' to giving current serving members of the Canadian Forces and veterans free parking year-round throughout the city.

Vancouver city Councillor  Melissa De Genova submitted the motions and said on Twitter that year-round free parking for veterans is a "small way to say thanks for an immeasurable contribution to our country."

City staff will now report back to council before Remembrance Day 2020 on how to implement the free parking promise.

The free parking will include City of Vancouver parking meters, Easy Park lots, surface lots, and Parks-operated parking facilities.

The motion predicts that the free parking will have no significant impact on parking meter revenue, and will be enforced with the help of existing license plates made by The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) for veterans.

Currently, veterans in Vancouver can park for free in the week leading up to Remembrance Day, but several other cities, like Red Deer, Alta., Regina, Sask., White Rock, B.C. and London, Ont., allow free parking for veterans year-round.
